This project consists of 86 images of garages and machine shops — along with the tools, and men who work in them. Combining images and text, a few images from this body of work were included in LensWork #15 in the fall of 1996. It is now available for the first time in this book-length monograph that includes the entire collection of images from this project.
My Grandfather was known as “Two-Bit Johnny.” He found himself unemployed and with only two-bits in his pocket. He purchased two old car batteries from a junk yard, made one good battery and then sold it back to the junk yard for a profit. From him I learned to love metal shops and the men who work there.
In a ten year period, I visited and photographed dozens of shops all over America and the men who work with steel. The images and stories are glimpses into their world.
